How to make a rust and corrosion?

Hi, this is Spell from BloodyBrushes. Today, step by step, I will show you how to get the effect of corrosion and paint coming off on the model. A little warning here, supporters of delicate messing will find nothing interesting here...

Witam, tu Spell z Bloody Brushes.

Prezentowana przeze mnie metoda jest zmodyfikowaną wersją pomysłu z The Weathering Magazine no.1

I decided to carry out this tutorial on some small element which will however have enough structure to be diversified. My choice was a fragment of AEGIS embankments. The method presented here is a modified version of an idea from The Weathering Magazine no.1

Black Brown.
On a black undercoat we are spraying Vallejo 71042 paint with the help of an airbrush.

2. Imperialnego orła oraz gwinty malujemy mieszanką rozcieńczonego Citadel Boltgun Metal z Citadel Chaos Black. Nity oraz pierścienie malujemy farbą Vallejo 069 Rust (metallic). Gdy to zrobimy, całość zabezpieczamy lakierem matowym.

We are painting the Imperial Eagle and threads with a blend of thinned down Citadel Boltgun Metal and Citadel Chaos Black. Then we paint rivets and rings with Vallejo 069 Rust paint (metallic). When we do, we need to seal the whole thing with a matte varnish.

Using AK-083 Track Wash and AK-085 Track Rust, we are mixing up a thick blend, with which we paint walls of the model using a big brush. Simultaneously, we need to avoid messing up "steel" frames.

Before that wash will dry, with the help of a "technical" brush (any old brush) we need to put on a thick layer of rust-coloured pigments. The thicker the layer, the better - it is important that the pigment is well soaked. In this step I used AK-044 Light Rust and AK-043 Rust Medium, and secured the pigments with a spray of AK-048 Pigment Fixer. When the hardener is dried, I sprayed it (mainly frames) with AK 088 Worn Effects.

When the Worn Effects dries, we need to slowly spray thin layers of Vallejo 71,081 Tank Dark Yellowm which in fact is a greenish in colour. Layers must be thin so that the pigment at the bottom doesn't smudge.

Musimy to robić z pewnym wyczuciem i dość delikatnie, by nie zerwać bazy i podkładu. Inaczej będzie klops. Gdyby jakiś fragment był oporny, to lekko zwilżamy go wodą.

With the help of a stippling brush, a skewer and a stiff brush from a DIY store (even I don't know what originally it could be used for, I bought it because I needed a a technical brush). We scrape the green paint off. We must do it quite gently in order not to break the base paint and undercoat - otherwise it will all be borked. If some fragment is too resistant, we moisten it lightly with water. It should help. After peeling is done, we again secure the whole thing with the glossy varnish this time (note that some say we should use a matte varnish before applying a filter).

7.  Ten etap na zdjęciu będzie raczej nieuchwytny. Gdy lakier wyschnie, to zielone elementy przyciemniamy filtrem zrobionym z AK 300 Dary Yellow Wash. Orła i gwinty traktujemy filtrem niebieskim AK-071.

This stage is rather elusive on a photo. When the varnish sets, we will darken the green elements with a filter made from AK-300 Dark Yellow Wash. Next, we treat the eagle and threads with a blue AK-071 filter. Thanks to that green, it is gaining depth. I don't know how to name it, but the green is becoming more... military.

With the help of a brush, we are painting on spots of Windsor & Newton 4 Cadmium Orange Hue, AK-012 Streaking Grime (dedicated for dark yellow or green) and AK-013 Rust Streaks. Just like it says in the operating manual, we are putting flecks into hollows (for example under the frame). After we wait a few minutes, with a flat brush moistened with white spirit we slowly smear their centre. It is best done with a single, slow stroke downwards. This way we are creating streaks. When the paint dries, we need to apply matte varnish again.

Finally, it should look like this. Optionally, we can apply a bit of AK-040 Light Dust at the base, or any other pigment imitating dust and the earth. And of course let's not forget to apply a pigment fixer later, to harden it.

To conclude, I wanted to add that it is possible to successfully apply the above technique on any vehicles from the WH40k universe. However, it is worthwhile to remember that this effect  looks best on variations of green, yellow or raw steel. So, this is where the Imperial Guard and Orks can rock!
