How to paint Space Marines quickly?

Another autumn has arrived... The bike has been put away, and I decided to paint something instead. Something quick and relaxed, just to wake up my muscle memory. I chose a Space Marine miniature — the same one we use extensively during our painting workshops in Toruń. At the same time, I’ll run another test comparing Speed Paints and Contrast paints, and the model will serve as a reference piece for the workshop participants.

Przyszła kolejna jesień... Rower odstawiony, postanowiłem coś pomalować... Coś na szybko, na luzie, tak aby pobudzić pamięć mięśniową. Padło na figurkę Space Marine, którą używamy masowo na naszych warsztatach malarskich w Toruniu. Przy okazji wykonam kolejny test farb Speed Paints i Contrasts, a model będzie takim wzorem dla uczestników warsztatów.

A quick spray primer — black first, then white applied vertically from above. A sloppy job done in the wrong temperature. The grain on the model is clearly visible, and it will have its consequences on the final result. But that’s fine — let’s keep painting.

Szybki podkład sprayem. Czarny a potem biały pionowo z góry. Niedokładna robota w nieodpowiedniej temperaturze. Widoczne jest ziarno na modelu. Będzie miało to swoje konsekwencje na końcowy efekt. Ale to nic malujemy dalej.

This will be a blue Space Marine. What are they called again? Ultramarines? :)

To będzie niebieski Space Marine. Jak oni się nazywają? Ultramarines? :)

A few minutes later, and after one coat of Contrast paint, it looks like this. I also painted the weapon and armor gaps black. I used red paint for the eyes and the “purity seal.”

Kilka minut później i po jednej warstwie kontrastu wygląda to tak. Pomalowałem dodatkowo czarną farbą broń i przerwy w pancerzu. Czerwona farbą pomalowałem oczy oraz pomalowałem "purity seal".

You can see the grain from the primer — the Contrast paint doesn’t cover it completely. That’s why a properly applied primer is so important.

Widać ziarno z podkładu. Contrast nie kryje całkowicie. Dlatego tak istotny jest dobrze wykonany podkład na figurce.

I painted the gold details next.
Pomalowałem złote elementy.

The next step was edge highlighting. It’s absolutely essential but takes the most time. A light gray paint worked perfectly here. You need to be fairly precise with this step.

Kolejny krok to krawędziowanie. Jest zdecydowanie niezbędne, ale zajmuje najwięcej pracy. Jasno szara farba spisała się tu idealnie. Trzeba wykonać to w miarę precyzyjnie.

I used a different shade of gray to highlight the edges of the bolter. I finished the barrel muzzle and magazine with silver paint.

Innym odcieniem szarości obrobiłem krawędzie boltera. Srebrną farbą wykończyłem tłumik lufy i magazynek.

I quickly painted a few details on the base.
Od niechcenia pomalowałem detale na podstawce.

Using three colors of Speed Paints, I finished the base. Later, I brightened the edges and painted the rim of the base black.

Trzema kolorami Speed Paints wykończyłem podstawkę. Później rozjaśniłem krawędzie i na czarno pomalowałem brzegi podstawki.

I think it turned out pretty nice for a gaming model. Of course, I could spend more time adding details, but for just an hour and a half of work... the result is, in my opinion, fantastic. That’s exactly why I love Speed Paints. As a fun fact, back in 2012 I wrote one of my very first tutorials on how to paint Space Marines. Jeez, I was so meticulous back then ;) Most of the links in that article don’t even work anymore :)

Myślę, że wyszło całkiem fajnie jak na model do grania. Oczywiście można by bawić sie w dalsze detale ale jak na 1,5h pracy... to efekt jest moim zdaniem rewelacyjny. Za to właśnie lubię farby typu Speed Paints. Jako ciekawostkę przypomnę, że w 2012 roku napisałem jeden z moich pierwszy tutorial o tym jak malować figurki Space Marines. Dżizas jaki byłem dokładny ;) Wiekszość linków w tym artykule już nie działa :)
