How to make a base with bricks and tiles?

This is a short guide on how to make a base with bricks and tiles. You can also use this method for larger scale figures, using appropriately larger bricks.

In order to diversify my models for the HeroQuest game, I bought skeleton figures from the Cursed City game by Games Workshop. There is no denying that the models from Games Workshop are of much better quality than the Avalon Hill skeletons.

W celu urozmaicenia moich modeli do gry HeroQuest zakupiłem figurki szkieletów z gry Cursed City od Games Workshop. Nie ma co ukrywać, że modele od Games Workshop są znacznie lepszej jakości niż szkielety Avalon Hill.

I decided to make some interesting stands for them. They were supposed to be in the atmosphere of dungeons and undergrounds. It turned out to be so interesting that I decided to take photos and share the idea with you :)

Postanowiłem wykonać im jakieś ciekawe podstawki. Miały być w klimacie lochów i podziemi. Wyszło to na tyle ciekawie, że postanowiłem zrobić zdjęcia i podzielić się z Wami tym pomysłem :)

To make these coasters I used:

Juweela bricks and tiles
Superglue type glue
Wikol type glue (PVA)
Fine sand

Do wykonania tych podstawek użyłem:

Cegiełek i płytek firmy Juweela
Klej typu Superglue
Klej typu Wikol (PVA)
Drobny piasek

You can also use other Juwell bricks. The ones below are already "factory" destroyed, which provides an interesting surface texture.

Możecie również użyć innych cegiełek od Juwella. Te poniżej są już "fabrycznie" zniszczone co zapewnia nam ciekawszą teksturę powierzchni.

The first step is to cut off the figure element which we are use to glue it to the base. This is to enable the figure to be glued higher, to the thickness of the bricks used. Leaving this element would make gluing the bricks to the base more difficult.

Pierwszym krokiem jest odcięcie elementu figurki, który wklejamy do podstawki. Ma to na celu umożliwienie przyklejenia figurki wyżej, na grubość zastosowanych cegiełek. Pozostawienie tego elementu utrudniło by przyklejanie cegiełek na podstawce.

Now we have a figure ready for the next steps.

Teraz mamy figurkę przygotowaną do kolejnych kroków.

We choose several bricks and tiles of different sizes and shapes. For a base with a diameter of 25 mm, we will use very little material :)

Wybieramy kilka cegiełek i płytek różnej wielkości i kształtu. Na podstawkę o średnicy 25mm zużyjemy naprawdę niewiele budulca :)

We start gluing the bricks in a completely random way on the base. I used Superglue because it quickly sticks the bricks to the plastic base. We can break larger tiles to add realism. I always start gluing from the feet of the figure to define the height/thickness of the brick layer.

Zaczynamy przyklejać cegiełki w całkowicie losowy sposób na podstawce. Użyłem klej typu Superglue ponieważ błyskawicznie przykleja cegiełki do plastikowej podstawki. Większe płytki możemy połamać aby nadać realizmu. Ja rozpoczynam przyklejanie zawsze od stóp figurki tak aby zdefiniować wysokość/grubość warstwy cegiełek.

We glue the bricks in different directions until the entire base is filled. Don't worry if some bricks stick out of the base. We will correct this in the next step.

Przyklejamy cegiełki w różnych kierunkach, aż zapełnimy całą podstawkę. Nie przejmujcie się jeśli jakieś cegiełki wystają poza obręb podstawki. Skorygujemy to w następnym kroku.

When the bricks stick to the base (almost immediately), we cut off the bricks protruding beyond the base. I used regular pliers for this purpose. This does not require any great force.

Kiedy cegiełki przykleją się już do podstawki (czyli praktycznie natychmiast) obcinamy wystające poza obręb podstawki cegiełki. Do tego celu użyłem zwykłych szczypców. Nie wymaga to żadnej dużej siły.

A little piece of advice from me is don't throw away the cut pieces of bricks. You will need them to later stick them on the surface of the base or use them in other projects.

Mała porada z mojej strony to nie wyrzucajcie obciętych kawałków cegiełek. Przydadzą się Wam aby później przykleić je na powierzchni podstawek lub wykorzystać w innych projektach.

Now we will fill all the larger gaps and places where we were unable to glue the bricks. We fill such places with PVA glue sing a small brush.

Teraz wypełnimy wszystkie większe szczeliny i miejsca, gdzie nie udało nam się przykleić cegiełek. Wypełniamy takie miejsca klejem typu Wikol (PVA) za pomocą małego pędzla.

Immerse the base in a container with fine sand. We shake it off excess sand.
Podstawkę zanurzamy w pojemniku z drobnym piaskiem. Otrzepujemy ją z nadmiaru piasku.

A box of sand.

We remove excess sand, e.g. with a toothpick or a modeling knife. You can also glue pieces of broken bricks that you left earlier.

Nadmiar piasku usuwamy np. wykałaczką albo nożykiem modelarskim. Możesz również dokleić kawałeczki odłamanych cegiełek, które wcześniej zostawiliśmy.

Using a hard and sharp tool, we add damage and scratches to the surfaces and edges of tiles and bricks.

Używając twardego i ostrego narzędzia, dodajemy zniszczeń i zarysowań na powierzchniach i krawędziach płytek oraz cegieł.

This is how we made the bases. We can paint them or even leave them as is. Juweela's red bricks are very realistic. So the choice is yours.

W ten oto sposób wykonaliśmy podstawki. Możemy je pomalować lub nawet pozostawić w takim stanie. Czerwone cegiełki Juweela są bardzo realistyczne. Wybór należy więc do Was.

Below is a variant of making such bases on figures that have a base as a whole. The method is the same, but I used the thinnest possible bricks around the feet. I also used very small pieces of rubble along with sand.

Poniżej wariant wykonania takich podstawek na figurkach, które maja podstawkę jako całość. Metoda jest taka sama ale zastosowałem tutaj jak najcieńsze cegiełki w okolicach stóp. Zastosowałem również bardzo drobne kawałeczki gruzu wraz z piaskiem.
