Painting "LOTR - Hiding Halflings" (SBS)
Today I will show you step by step how I made this little diorama. Model is a 10mm miniature from Varus Miniatures 3D printed using ELEGOO Mars 3 PRO and Siraya Tech Professional Fast Grey resin. The time I needed to complete this project was only 3 days. And among other things, that's why I loved this small scale :)

Concept
I suspect that most of you know this famous scene from the first part of the LOTR movie. Hobbits hiding from the Nazgûl in the bough of a tree. I had several shots of this scene in my head. The colors of this forest, shades of green, vegetation, colors of clothes of the four hobbits and the background of the background. I wanted to recreate everything as much as I could on a 10mm scale.
Podejrzewam, że większośc z Was zna tą sławną scenę z pierwszej cześci filmu LOTR. Hobbity chowające sie przed Nazgulem w konarze drzewa. W głowie miałem kilka ujęć z tej sceny. Kolorystykę tego lasu, odcienie zieleni, roślinność, kolory ubrań czterech hobbitów oraz tło tylnego planu. Chciałem odtworzyć to wszystko najbardziej jak będę mógł w stanie w skali 10mm.
3D Printing
I started my work by printing the model on the ELEGOO Mars 3 PRO and Siraya Tech Professional Fast Grey resin. It didn't take long because the 10mm model is not big.
Pracę rozpocząłem od wydrukowania modelu na drukarce 3D ELEGOO Mars 3 PRO i żywicy Siraya Tech Professional Fast Grey. Nie trwało to długo bo 10mm model nie jest duży.

10mm and your eyes
I used magnifying glasses to paint. Without this gadget, I am unable to focus my eyes on such small models. I sincerely recommend this solution not to strain your eyes but also your neck.
Do malowania użyłem okularów powiększających. Bez tego gadżetu nie jestem w stanie skupić wzroku na tak małych modelach. Szczerze polecam to rozwiązanie aby nie męczyć wzroku ale również karku.

Scenic base preparation
I placed the printed model on a pedestal. I was looking for the right size. I tried to create an arrangement of the whole scene in my head. At this stage, I already had a pre-prepared plan, how I will make a scenic base, create a tree and vegetation.
Ustawiłem wydrukowany model na piedestale. Szukałem odpowiedniej wielkości. Starałem się stworzyć w mojej głowie aranżacje całej scenki. Na tym etapie miałem już wstępnie gotowy cały plan, jak wykonam podstawkę sceniczną, stworze drzewo i roślinność.
From the drawer full of "junk" collected over the years, I chose what I will need to create this scenic base. Real roots brought from the forest and pieces of branches.
Z szuflady pełnej uzbieranych przez lata "śmieci" do tworzenia podstawek scenicznych wybrałem to co będzie mi potrzebne. Prawdziwe korzenie przyniesione z lasu i kawałki gałęzi.

I used Milliput mass for landscaping.
Użyłem masy Milliput do ukształtowania terenu.
In the next step, I used Vallejo Dark Earth structural paste. Before it was completely dry and hard, I pressed very small pebbles and tiny roots into it.
W kolejnym kroku wykorzystałem pastę strukturalną Vallejo Dark Earth. Zanim całkowicie wyschła i zrobiła się twarda, wcisnąłem w nią bardzo małe kamyczki i drobne korzenie.
After adding a few more details, I reinforced the whole thing using AK Gravel&Sand liquid glue.
Po dodaniu kilku kolejnych detali, wzmocniłem całość używając płynnego kleju firmy AK Gravel&Sand.
I chose some small twigs to imitate the trees in the forest. I reinforced them using paper clips and Super Glue.
Wybrałem kilka małych gałązek aby imitowały drzewa w lesie. Wzmocniłem je stosując spinacze i klej typu Super Glue.
I glued the trees in the right places of the base. Using Green Stuff in several places I corrected the cavities in the trees. I also "sculpted" the main tree so that the connection of the printed root with the added natural twig is not visible.
Przykleiłem drzewa w odpowiednich miejscach podstawki. Używając Green Stuff w kilku miejscach poprawiłem ubytki w drzewach. "Wyrzeźbiłem" również główne drzewo tak aby nie było widoczne połaczenie wydrukowanego korzenia z dodaną naturalną gałązką.
Painting
I always use an airbrush to apply the primer on 10mm models. The 0.2mm nozzle gives me good control. Details in this scale are so small that I don't want to cause them to be flooded with too much paint.
Do nakładania podkładu na modelach 10mm używam zawsze aerografu. Dysza 0,2mm pozwala mi na dobrą kontrolę. Detale w tej skali są tak małe, że nie chcę spowodować zalania ich nadmierną ilością farby.

I applied a black primer to part of the model.
Nałożyłem czarny podkład na część modelu.
In the next step, I used a Vallejo Leather Brown primer for the rest of the base areas.
W kolejnym kroku użyłem brązowego podkładu Vallejo Leather Brown na pozostałe obszary podstawki.
I added more depth and shadows using GW Contrast Snakebite Leather and GW Shade Agrax Eartshade on all surfaces.
Dodałem więcej głebi i cieni używając GW Contrast Snakebite Leather i GW Shade Agrax Eartshade na wszystkich powierzchniach.
Pomalowałem kamienie.
I partially darkened the GW Shade Nuln Oil stones.
Przyciemniłem częściowo kamienie GW Shade Nuln Oil.
I highlighted all the stones, roots and the tree. I mainly focused on edging.
Rozjaśniłem wszystkie kamienie, korzenie i drzewo. Skupiłem się głównie na krawędziowaniu.
I started painting hobbits. On this scale, I have to admit that it was a challenge. I tried to choose the colors of the clothes in accordance with what was shown in the video.
Zacząłem malować hobbity. W tej skali muszę przyznać, że było to wyzwaniem. Starałem się dobrać kolory ciuchów zgodnie z tym co było przedstawione w filmie.
I added shadows and highlights. Please note that the photos were taken with high magnification. The human eye will not normally be able to see most of the details in such small scale models.
Dodałem cienie i rozjaśnienia. Pamiętajcie, że zdjęcia zostały wykonane z dużym powiększeniem. Ludzkie oko nie będzie w stanie normalnie dostrzeć większości szczegółów w tak małej skali modeli.
Now all I have to do is paint the Nazgul. For technical reasons, I had to paint it separately and then glue it to the base. It was more convenient and gave me the opportunity to paint this figure more accurately.
Teraz pozostało mi pomalować Nazgula. Z przyczyn technicznych musiałem pomalować go osobno, a dopiero później przykleić do podstawki. Było to wygodniejsze i dało mi możliwość dokładniejszego pomalowania tej figurki.

I glued the figure in the right place. I filled the empty spaces around the figurine with the same Vallejo Dark Earth structural paste. I put some small pebbles in it.
Przykleiłem figurkę na właściwym miejscu. Wypełniłem puste przestrzenie wokół figurki tą samą pastą strukturalną Vallejo Dark Earth. Wcisnąłem w nią kilka drobnych kamyczków.
I used some oil effects to paint the ground under the rider.
Użyłem kilku efektów olejnych do pomalowania ziemi pod jeźdźcem.
There's already quite a mess on the desk :)
Na biurku powstał już całkiem niezły bałagan :)
At this stage, I still didn't know how to make the leaves on the trees. I found an old tree in my collection. I won them in one of the competitions I participated in.
Na tym etapie nadal nie wiedzialem jak zrobię liście na drzewach. Znalazlem w moich zbiorach jakieś stare drzewko. Wygrałem je na jednym z konkursów, w których brałem udział.
I cut off all individual branches and glued them with SuperGlue to the previously made trunks.
Obciąłem wszystkie pojedyncze gałezie i przkleiłem je klejem typu SuperGlue do zrobionych wcześniej pni.
The model is practically finished. However, I missed the background for the whole scene, visible in the frames of the movie.
Model został praktycznie ukończony. Brakowało mi jednak tła dla całej scenki, widocznego w kadrach filmu.
So I made a simple background. On a thin, white piece of plastic, I almost casually made a few vertical strokes with a large brush and watered down black paint. I glued the background to the back wall of the pedestal. Forgive me, but the photo of this background has been lost somewhere in the abyss of Chaos ... I'm not a fan of this solution, but I think it perfectly complemented the whole scene.
Zrobiłem więc proste tło. Na cienkim, białym kawałku plastiku, praktycznie od niechcenia wykonałem kilka, pionowych pociągnięć dużym pędzlem i rozwodnioną czarną farbą. Tło przykleiłem do tylniej ścianki piedestału. Wybaczcie ale zdjęcie tego tła przepadło gdzieś w otchłaniach Chaosu... Nie jestem zwolennikiem tego rozwiązania ale myślę, że idealnie dopełniło ono całą scenkę.
The final touch
All that's left is to add the green on the base. In the movie, the place where the Hobbits hid was overgrown with ferns. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to make such 10mm ferns :) So I used electrostatic grass in a dark green color, similar to the color of leaves on trees.
Pozostało już tylko dodanie zieleni na podstawce. W filmie, miejsce gdzie ukryły sie Hobbity, było porośnięte paprociami. Niestety nie mam pomysłu jak wykonać takie paprocie w skali 10mm :) Użyłem więc trawki elektrostatycznej w ciemnym kolorze zieleni, zbliżonym do koloru liści na drzewach.
I still missed the depth in the greenery on the trees. I secured the model with food wrap. Using the airbrush, I applied dark washes from the bottom of the trees and light, almost yellow ones, from the top.
Brakowało mi jeszcze głebi w zieleni na drzewach. Zabezpieczyłem model folią do żywności. Za pomocą aerografu naniosłem ciemne washe od dołu drzew oraz jasne, wręcz żółte, od góry.

Now the model is complete! Almost, the inscription on the pedestal is missing, which I will 3D print later...
Teraz model jest kompletny! No prawie, brakuje napisu na piedestale, który wydrukuję w 3D później...
