Green Stuff World - Acrylic Metallic Paints

If you've followed my work in the past, you may have noticed that I don't use the NMM technique. I only used this technique in one project. It's hard to explain, but I don't like her. Anyway, this technique did not fit most of the models I painted (a lot of historical miniatures). For this reason, I have always been looking for good quality acrylic metallic paints. After a few years of break, unfortunately, metallic paints suffered the most in my workshop. Most of them thickened very much or completely dried to stone. In my search for new paints, I came across Green Stuff World sets. I know that there are many controversies related to this company in the environment, but I decided to try their product. After all, it's just paints, and there are already a lot of paint manufacturers on the market. Today I will show you two of these sets that are currently in my paint stand.

Jeśli obserwowaliście moje prace w przeszłości to być może zauważyliście, że nie używam techniki NMM. Tą technikę zastosowałem tylko w jednym projekcie. Trudno mi to wytłumaczyć ale jej nie lubię. Zresztą technika ta nie pasowała do wiekszości modeli jakie malowałem (bardzo dużo historycznych miniaturek). Z tego powodu zawsze poszukiwałem dobre jakości akrylowych farb metalicznych. Po kilku latach przerwy niestety najbardziej ucierpiały w moim warsztacie właśnie farby metaliczne. W większości bardzo mocno zgęstniały lub całkowicie zaschły na kamień.  W poszukiwaniach nowych farb natrafiłem na zestawy Green Stuff World. Wiem, że w środowisku jest wiele kontrowersji związanych z tą firmą ale postanowiłem spróbować ich produkt. Wkońcu to tylko farby, a producentów farb na rynku jest już sporo. Dzisiaj pokażę Wam dwa z tych zestawów, które aktualnie zagościły w moim stojaku na farbki.

Introduction

Green Stuff World released three sets of metallic paints, Gold, Silver and Colors. Personally, I've never used metallic shades of base colors like red or green, so I was only interested in the first two sets. Those paints are water-based and non-toxic, these colours have been optimised for both brush and airbrush. For best airbrush results, we should use 1:1 dilution with acrylic thinner (this is what the manufacturer recommends but it is very subjective).

Green Stuff World wydało trzy zestawy farb metalicznych, Gold, Silver i Colors. . Osobiście nigdy ne wykorzystywałem metalicznych odcieni bazowych kolorów jak czerwony czy zielony, więc byłem zainteresowany tylko dwoma pierwszymi zestawami. Te farby są na bazie wody (akrylowe) i nietoksyczne. Zostały zoptymalizowane zarówno dla pędzla, jak i aerografu. Aby uzyskać najlepsze efekty malowania aerografem, powinniśmy stosować rozcieńczenie 1:1 z rozcieńczalnikiem do akryli (tak zaleca producent ale jest to bardzo subiektywne).

What are metallic paints?

They are a type of paint that can be made with acrylic, alcohol, and enamel mediums, and can contain different metal pigments, which give it a shiny and reflective finish. These pigments can be made of various materials, such as aluminum, bronze, copper, and other metals. Pearlescent pigments of natural or even synthetic origin are also available but offer less coverage. And here lies the main difference with the NMM technique, which gives a completely matte finish.

Są rodzajem farby, którą można wykonać za pomocą mediów akrylowych, alkoholu i emalii, i mogą zawierać różne pigmenty metalowe. Nadają one błyszczące i odbijające światło wykończenie. Pigmenty te mogą być wykonane z różnych materiałów, takich jak aluminium, brąz, miedź i inne metale. Dostępne są również perłowe pigmenty pochodzenia naturalnego lub nawet syntetycznego, ale zapewniają one mniejsze krycie. I tutaj tkwi główna róznica z techniką NMM, która daje całkowicie matowy efekt końcowy.

Metallic Paints Set - Gold

Let's take a look at the Gold set first. Paints are packed in a paper box. The model on the packaging does not impress with the quality of painting. In addition, it is signed as "Bust by Joaquin Palacios", and it is not a bust, but a figurine :) Small mistake. I think that the manufacturer could work on a better graphic design of this box. But does it matter to us? What counts is the contents of this box, i.e. paints and their quality.

Jako pierwszy weźmy pod lupę zestaw Gold. Farby zapakowane są w papierowe pudełko. Model na opakowaniu nie powala jakością malowania. W dodatku podpisany jest jako "Bust by Joaquin Palacios", a nie jest to popiersie a figurka :) Drobny błąd. Myślę, że producent mógł by popracować nad lepszą szatą graficzną tego pudełka. Czy ma to jednak dla nas znaczenie? Liczy się zawartość tego pudełka czyli farby i ich jakość.

Inside the box you will find 6 bottles of paint. They are packed without any plastic insert. In terms of ecology, this is a huge plus for me.

W środku pudełka znajdziemy 6 buteleczek z farbą. Są one zapakowane luzem, bez żadnej plastikowej wkładki. Pod kątem ekologii dla mnie to ogromny plus.

Gold Metallics set

The paints are supplied in standard Vallejo/AK bottles. Thanks to this, they fit all standardized paint stands available on the market. The capacity is also standard, i.e. 17ml.

Farbki są dostarczane w standardowych buteleczkach typu Vallejo/AK. Dzięki temu pasują do wszelakich ustandaryzowanych, dostęnyhc na rynku stojaków na farbki. Pojemność jest również standardowa czyli 17ml.

Each bottle includes a stainless steel ball for a faster and homogenous mixture. When using them, it is important to shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the metal pigments are thoroughly mixed with the paint. The use of mixing balls is very helpful in performing this function. 

Każda butelka zawiera kulkę ze stali nierdzewnej, która pomaga w szybszym i dokładnym mieszaniu. Podczas ich uzywania tych farb ważne jest, aby przed użyciem dobrze wstrząsnąć butelką, aby pigmenty metaliczne dokładnie wymieszały się z medium. Bardzo pomocne w wykonywaniu tej funkcji jest użycie kulek mieszających.

The second set of paints I bought for the Silver set. I won't roll here again about the same thing. Packing is uniform. Besides, there is a small mistake, "Bust by Knight Models" and in the picture there is a figurine not a bust :) The bottles are also the same, and they also have a metal ball inside.

Drugim zestawem farb jaki nabyłem do zestawu Silver. Nie będe się tu ponownie rolował o tym samym. Pakowanie jest jednolite. Poza tym jest mały błąd, "Bust by Knight Models" a na zdjęciu jest figurka nie popiersie :) Buteleczki są również takie same, i tak samo mają w środku metalową kulkę.

You can also mix them with other transparent acrylic inks to create custom metal shades, especially if you start with a white metal colour such as Mystic White.

Można je również mieszać np. z inkami, aby uzyskać niestandardowe metaliczne odcienie, zwłaszcza jeśli zaczynasz od białego metalicznego koloru, takiego jak Mystic White.

I tested these paints on small 10mm scale models. I must admit that I was very positively surprised. I did not expect such good quality of these paints. Their consistency is similar to Vallejo Game Air. The paints cover very well, the consistency for metallics is almost perfect. They are not too thick, they do not dry too quickly on the brush. The large number of shades in both sets also makes painting easier. They work equally well with an airbrush. They require a little dilution. They do require gentle mixing before use. Thanks to the metal ball in each bottle, mixing takes literally a moment. We do not need any specialized electric mixer.

Przetestowałem te farby na małych modelach w skali 10mm. Muszę przyznać, że bardzo pozytywnie się zaskoczyłem. Nie spodziewałem się tak dobrej jakości tych farb. Ich konsystencja jest zbliżona do Vallejo Game Air. Farby kryją bardzo dobrze, konsystencja jak na metaliki jjest wręcz idealna. Nie są za gęste, nie wysychają za szybko na pędzlu. Duża ilość odcieni w obu tych zestawach również ułatwia malowanie. Równie dobrze spisują się w użyciu z aerografem. Wymagają niewielkiego rozcieńczenia. Rzeczywiście wymagają delikatnego wymieszania przed użyciem. Dzieki metalowej kulce w każdej butelce wymieszanie trwa dosłownie chwilę. Nie potrzebujemy żadnego specjalistycznego, elektrycznego miksera.

I don't know who actually produces Green Stuff World paints. I don't know if this company has its own paint factory. However, I must admit that the metallic paint sets shown to you are of really good quality. These are solid metallic paints that I can recommend to every miniature painter with a clear conscience. Nie wiem kto tak naprawdę produkuje farby marki Green Stuff World. Nie wiem czy firma ta posiada swoją własną fabrykę farb. Muszę jednak przyznać, że pokazane Wam zestawy farb metlicznych są naprawdę dobrej jakości. To solidne farby metaliczne, które z czystym sumieniem moge polecić każdemu malarzowi figurek.
