How to paint Warmaster? - High Elves Spearman

A simple guide on how to paint High Elves Spearman models for Warmaster game.

The High Elves Spearman models presented in this guide were created by Forest Dragon. I printed them myself on the Elegoo Mars 3 PRO printer using Elegoo Standard Resin Gray. However, I recommend you to use a more flexible resin, such as Ameralabs TGM-7, which is of excellent quality and dedicated to miniatures used in games. All my future gaming figures will be printed in Ameralabs resin because it is very resilient and the probability of the miniature breaking during the game is negligible. The tutorial below is not SPEEDPAINT. These are my first 10mm models in over 20 years. I wanted to check what can be "squeezed" out of them, hence the large number of steps to achieve the final effect. In the future, I will develop a faster method of painting them and present it on the blog.

Przedstawione w poradniku modele High Elves Spearman zostały stworzone przez firmę Forest Dragon. Wydrukowałem je samodzielnie na drukarce Elegoo Mars 3 PRO używając żywicy Elegoo Standard Resin Grey. Zalecam Wam jednak używanie bardziej elastycznej żywicy jak np. doskonałej jakościowo i dydykowanej do figurek używanych w grach -  Ameralabs TGM-7. Wszystkie moje przyszłe figurki do grania będę drukował właśnie w żywicy Ameralabs bowiem jest ona bardzo sprężysta i prawdopodobieństwo pęknięcia figurki w czasie rozgrywki jest znikome. Poniższy poradnik to nie jest SPEEDPAINT. To moje pierwsze modele w skali 10mm od ponad 20 lat. Chciałem sprawdzić co da się z nich "wycisnąć" stąd duża ilość kroków aby osiągnąć końcowy efekt. W przyszłości opracuję szybszą metodę ich malowania i zaprezentuje na blogu.

Paints used.

When you are painting 10mm gaming miniaturess, it's very convenient to paint the whole squad in one go. Repeat each of the steps below on all minis in the squad and move on to the next step. In this way, we will paint the entire unit faster and more uniformly. The figures are so small that the most important thing in my opinion is to focus on the first row with the banner.

Kiedy malujecie figurki do grania w skali 10mm, bardzo wygodnie jest malowac cały oddział za jednym razem. Każdy z poniższych kroków powtarzamy na wszystkich figurkach z oddziału i przechodzimy do nastepnego kroku. W ten sposób pomalujemy cały oddział szybciej i bardziej jednolito. Figurki są tak małe, że najwazniejsze moim zdaniem jest skupić się na pierwszym szeregu ze sztandarem. 

I used magnifying glasses to paint. Without this gadget, I am unable to focus my eyes on such small models. I sincerely recommend this solution not to strain your eyes but also your neck.

Do malowania użyłem okularów powiększających. Bez tego gadżetu nie jestem w stanie skupić wzroku na tak małych modelach. Szczerze polecam to rozwiązanie aby nie męczyć wzroku ale również karku.

Here we go. Prepare each strip of figurines for painting. Wash the models in soapy water and dry well. I only used brushes to paint these models.

Zaczynamy. Przygotuj każdy pasek figurek do malowania. Umyj modele w wodzie z mydłem i dobrze wysusz. Do malowania tych modeli używałem tylko pędzli.

Models ready to paint.

Apply a gray primer with a brush.

Nałóż szary podkład pędzlem.

Grey Matt Primer.

Paint the faces. Don't worry if the paint comes out of the area. We'll cover it with a darker color later.

Pomaluj twarze. Nie przejmuj się jeśli farba wyjdzie poza obszar. Poźniej przykryjemy go ciemniejszym kolorem.

Paint all metallic areas.

Pomaluj wszystkie metaliczne obszary.

Paint the spears.

Pomaluj włócznie.

Paint all visible parts of the clothes white.

Pomaluj wszystkie widoczne elementy ubrań na biało.

Use a light gray color to correct the edges of the shields.

Jasnym szarym kolorem skoryguj brzegi tarcz.

At this point, you have to choose a base color for the entire unit or for your entire army. I chose turquoise.

W tym momencie musisz wybrać bazowy kolor dla całego oddziału lub też dla Twojej całej armii. Ja wybrałem turkusowy.

I quickly corrected the shields using GW Contrast paint.

W szybki sposób poprawiłem tarcze używając farby typu GW Contrast.

I painted the leather gloves with a lighter brown color.

Jaśniejszym kolorem brązowym pomalowałem skórzane rękawice.

I painted all hair in one color. If you want you can vary the hair color in the unit.

Wszystkie włosy pomalowałem w jednym kolorze. Jeśli chcesz możesz zróżnicować kolor włosów w oddziale.

In the figures of the first row, I painted all the golden elements.
W figurkach pierwszego rzędu pomalowałem wszystkie złote elementy.

I added details, red contrasting color on all shields gems.

Dodałem detale, czerwony kontrastujący kolor na wszystkich tarczach.

Using the wash I adjusted the faces and leather gloves.

Używając washa poprawiłem twarze i skórzane rękawice.

I increased the contrast with a black wash, improving the armor and all possible nooks and crannies. In this way, I also covered up any shortcomings in painting.

Czarnym washem zwiekszyłem kontrast poprawiając zbroje oraz wszystkie możliwe zakamarki. W ten sposób zasłoniłem również wszelkie niedociągnięcia w malowaniu.

I highlighted the edges of the shields.

Rozjaśniłem krawędzie tarcz.

I highlighted helmets and spears.

Rozjaśniłem chełmy i włócznie.

I mixed 50% turquoise base color with white paint. I highlighted all the turquoise edges to increase the contrast.

Wymieszałem bazowy turkusowy kolor w 50% z białą farbą. Rozjaśniłem wszystkie turkusowe krawędzie zwiekszając kontrast.

As I said at the beginning, it's worth focusing more on the first row of the unit. It's the most visible. So I refined the details and the banner.

Tak jak powiedziałem na wstępie, warto skupić sie bardziej na pierwszy szeregu oddziału. Jest on najbardziej widoczny. Dopracowałem więc detale i sztandar.

I glued the figures to the bases and filled the gaps with Green Putty. I also printed the basess myself using free STL files. It is worth gluing the first row first, painting the base, and then gluing the second row.

Przykleiłem figurki do podstawek i wypełniłem szczeliny używając Green Putty. Podstawki również wydrukowałem sam korzystając z darmowych plików STL. Warto przykleić najpierw pierwszy rząd, pomalowac podstawkę, a następnie przykleić drugi rząd.

I used traditional methods to finish the base - PVA glue, sand and traditional static grass. It is best to use the smallest grass we have or super small 2mm tufts of grass.

Do wykończenia podstawke zastosowałem tradycyjne metody - klej PVA, piasek i tradycyjną posypkę. Najlepiej użyć najmniejszej trawki jaką mamy albo super małych kępek trawy 2mm.

Models were supposed to be "old hammer" style and I think they are :)

Modele miały być w stylu "old hammer" i myślę, że są :) 

Thank you for watching this tutorial to the end. Planning more Warmaster related posts in the future. I know it's a niche system, but the sentiment from years ago came back to me :) I know, however, that painting an entire army at such a high level is impossible because it would take forever :) Hence, as I mentioned at the beginning, I started looking for a golden mean - quick painting of 10mm miniatures and quite good effect.
