Framed LOTR Diorama (Part 2)
Przez ostatni tydzień nadal pracowałem nad dioramą. Każdego dnia staram się poświęcić chwilę aby projekt posuwał się do przodu. Dzisiaj kolejny raport motywujący do działania :)

I started working on the lighting. In my opinion, it is supposed to create the main atmosphere of the entire scene. The light blinking in the distance and coming from the entrances to the dungeons is to be one of the most important elements. For this purpose, I will use "state-of-the-art" candles powered by a CR2032 battery purchased at Pepco in a set for about 2 EURO :)
Zacząłem pracę nad oświetleniem. To ono w moim założeniu ma budować główny klimat całej scenki. Mrugające w oddali i dochodzące z wejść do lochów światło ma być jednym z najważniejszych elementów. Do tego celu wykorzystam "najnowocześniejsze" znicze zasilane baterią CR2032 zakupione w Pepco w zestawie za około o 7PLN :)
However, after disassembling these candles, it turned out that the switch is mechanical... There is no electronics, only a LED and a battery. Moreover, the candles themselves are too big. So I bought a so-called battery basket with a switch (price about 1 EURO). .
Po rozebraniu jednak tych "świeczek: okazało się, że włącznik jest mechaniczny... Nie ma tam żadnej elektroniki, tylko dioda i bateria. Do tego same świeczki są za duże. Zakupiłem więc tzw. koszyczek na baterię z włącznikiem (cena około 4PLN).
A quick, crude installation for the test showed that everything worked as it should.
Szybka, prymitywna instalacja dla testu pokazała, że wszystko działa jak należy.
I installed the basket on the bottom of the box. This way it will be invisible when the diorama is standing. I also have free access to the switch and battery.
Zainstalowałem koszyk na spodzie pudełka. W ten sposób będzie niewidoczny gdy diorama stoi. Mam też swobodny dostęp do włącznika i baterii.
However, the cables turned out to be too short, so I extended them. I glued them with hot glue inside the box and placed the LED in the right place. I left the diffuser on for now, but later it will turn out that the light is too weak and I will remove it.
Przewody okazały się jednak za krótkie więc je przedłużyłem. Przykleiłem je gorącym klejem wewnątrz pudełka i umieściłem diode we właściwym miejscu. Na razie zostawiłem dyfuzor ale później okaże się, że światło jest zbyt słabe i go usunę.
The test in a dark bathroom went so well that I decided to add an additional LED on the left side. Light will come from several entrances to the underground. To install this diode, I had to cut the styrodur. I also cut holes in the entrances, which were sealed. The effect on the left side will not be very spectacular, but it will add flavor to the whole.
Test w ciemnej łazience wyszedł tak dobrze, że postanowiłem dodać dodatkową diodę z lewej strony. Światło będzie dochodzić z kilku wejść do podziemi. Żeby zamontować tą diodę musiałem jednak rozciąć styrodur. Wyciąłem również otwory w wejściach, które były zasklepione. Efekt po lewej stronie nie będzie mocno spektakularny ale doda "smaczku" całości.
I tested whether the power supply works and covered the entire installation. This is what the diorama looks like at the moment.
Przetestowałem czy zasilanie działa i zasłoniłem całą instalacje. Tak prezentuje się dioramka na ta chwilę.
I started working on the main staircase that the characters would run to. The main source of light will come from this entrance with stairs. I don't really have an idea how to make them yet, but I'm going with the flow (as with the whole project :)).
Zacząłem pracować nad głównym schodami, do których będą biegli bohaterowie. Z tego wejścia ze schodami będzie dobiegało główne źródło światła. Nie za bardzo mam jeszcze pomysł jak je zrobić ale idę na żywioł (jak z całością projektu :)).
I realized that in the end it would be difficult to paint some of the hidden elements. So I decided to cover the problematic areas with a dark primer. I used a special primer for the terrain that does not dissolve the styrodur. This foundation is included in the previously mentioned Army Painter - "Dungeons & Caverns Core Set".
Uświadomiłem sobie, że finalnie będzie ciężko pomalować mi niektóre zasłonięte elementy. Postanowiłem więc pokryć problematyczne obszary ciemnym podkładem. Wykorzystałem specjalny podkład do terenu, który nie rozpuszcza styroduru. Podkład ten znajduje się we wspomnianym prędzej zestawie Army Painter - "Dungeons & Caverns Core Set".
The primer works great but takes longer to dry than standard acrylic primer.
Podkład działa wyśmienicie ale schnie dłużej niż standardowy podkład akrylowy.
Finally, I glued the pieces to the right side of the frame.
Ostatecznie przykleiłem elementy z prawej strony ramki.
I started working on the details on the right side. Another entrance and stairs appeared. I decided to vary the texture of the walls a bit. I used the smallest Juweela bricks I have.
Zacząłem pracę nad detalami z prawej strony. Pojawiło się kolejne wejście i schody. Postanowiłem zróżnicować trochę tekstury ścian. Wykorzystałem najmniejsze cegiełki od Juweela jakie posiadam.
Brick by brick, using a small tweezers, I glued them to the wall. I used the columns from Gamers Grass again.
Cegiełka po cegiełce, używając małej pinsety przyklejałem je do ściany. Ponownie wykorzystałem kolumny od Gamers Grass.

I realized that details would be the most important thing here. So I painstakingly built subsequent walls, brick by brick. I added cracks on the bricks, damage and debris on the floor under the walls.
Uświadomiłem sobie, że detale będą tutaj najważniejsze. Mozolnie budowałem więc kolejne ściany cegiełka po cegiełce. Dodawałem pęknięcia na cegiełkach, zniszczenia i gruz na podłodze pod ścianami.
In the meantime, I used GOLDEN pastes on the main bridge. I created quite thick layers that took longer to dry, so I didn't want to waste time. I also used the same pastes to seal any gaps through which LED light should not escape later.
W między czasie stosowałem pasty GOLDEN na głównym moście. Tworzyłem dość grube warstwy, które dłużej schły więc nie chciałem marnować czasu.Tymi samymi pastami uszczelniałem też wszelkie szczeliny, którymi nie powinno się później wydostawać światło.
In subsequent tests, I didn't like the LED light visible in the entrances on the left. It's too weak. I started looking for a way to improve it. I pasted aluminum foil, which acted a bit like a mirror. I'll finally see if I leave it or paint it black.
W kolejnych testach nie podobało mi się światło widoczne w wejściach po lewej stronie. Jest zbyt słabe. Zacząłem szukać sposobu jak to poprawić. Wkleiłem folię aluminiową, która zadziałała trochę jak lustro. Finalnie zobaczę czy to pozostawię czy pomaluje na czarno.
I looked at the diorama from all sides and decided to add more bricks to the right side. I also added damaged bricks in the entrance under the bridge on the left. Another evening flew by...
Oglądałem dioramę z każdej strony i zdecydowałem dokleić więcej cegiełek z prawej strony. Dodałem też zniszczone cegiełki w wejściu pod mostem z lewej strony. Kolejny wieczór zleciał...
A day off and I went back to work. I started on the main stairs and entrance.
Dzień przerwy i wróciłem do pracy. Zabrałem się za główne schody i wejście.
I added more bricks on the left side. This time I chose larger ones to diversify the whole.
Dodałem kolejne cegiełki z lewej strony. Tym razem wybrałem większe aby zróżnicować całość.
I went through a box of old Warhammer bits to add more detail. Unfortunately, this makes the whole thing less kosher in the LOTR atmosphere. I'm thinking about changing the name of the whole thing. Perhaps this is simply a fantasy dungeon team rather than a ring team. What do you think about this idea?
Przeszukałem pudełko ze starymi bitsami od Warhammera w celu dodania większej ilości detali. Niestety przez to całość staje się mniej koszerna w klimacie LOTR. Chodzi mi po głowie zmiana nazwy całości. Być może jest to po prostu drużyna w lochach fantasy, a nie drużyna pierścienia. Co sądzicie o tym pomyśle?
I glued some of the modified bits onto the walls. I have the impression that it's starting to make some sense. Of course, I have a picture in my head and I know that you may not see it at this stage. It will definitely look better after applying primer to the whole diorama.
Dokleiłem kilka przerobionych bitsów na ściany. Mam wrażenie, że jakoś sensownie zaczyna to wyglądać. Oczywiście mam obraz w mojej głowie i wiem, że Wy możecie tego nie dostrzegać na tym etapie. Na pewno po nałożeniu podkładu na całość będzie to wyglądało lepiej.
The next task will be to finish the part above the main bridge and make stalactites hanging from the ceiling...
Kolejnym zadaniem będzie dokończenie części powyżej głównego mostu i wykonanie stalaktytów zwisających z sufitu...
